Outdoor Dining Ideas for Every Occasion

From a Tuesday supper for two to a long table for twelve, a few rules make outdoor hosting effortless.
Outdoor hosting fails for practical reasons far more often than aesthetic ones: the table is too small, the light is too bright, the serving surface is inside.
Size the table to the way you host
Allow 24 to 26 inches of table edge per guest, and choose a top at least 40 inches deep so a center runner does not crowd the plates. A 96-inch table seats eight comfortably and ten when the evening calls for it.
Mix seating deliberately
Armchairs at the heads, stackable side chairs or a bench along one side. A bench is the most forgiving seat at the table — it absorbs an extra guest without a second thought.
Solve shade and light
A vented market umbrella handles the afternoon; lanterns and a low center arrangement handle the evening. Skip anything tall enough to interrupt eye contact across the table.
Keep a landing surface close
A console or side table within a few steps of the table means no one has to carry a tray back indoors mid-course.
